Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero's firm, GemInvest Limited, moved to evict Jomo Gecaga from his apartment in Nairobi's Riverside estate in 2020. The eviction was triggered by Gecaga's failure to pay the rent, which cost Sh. 540,000 per month.
According to court documents, Gecaga had refused to pay Sh. 400,000 as rent security deposit and sign a new lease agreement after the earlier one expired on March 28, 2014. He had instead chosen to pay half rent of Sh. 250,000 beyond September 2020 and forgo paying an additional lease fee of Sh. 950,000.
On September 15, 2020, GemInvest Limited issued a notice to Gecaga, stating that they would not accept payment of Sh. 250,000 only as monthly rent. The company requested that Gecaga clear the outstanding bill of Sh. 950,000 for the period ending September 30 and then vacate the unit.
On September 17, 2020, GemInvest issued JSTA, Gecaga's company, a tenancy termination notice. The notice indicated that JSTA should clear outstanding rentals of Sh. 950,000, renovate the apartment, and vacate the house by September 30. GemInvest threatened court action if the conditions were not met.
