Estonia Partnership in Kenya: A Leap Towards Digital Education ¶
On Friday, 10th September, 2021, Her Excellency Kersti Kaljulaid, President of the Republic of Estonia, commissioned and demonstrated the Opiq platform, a digital learning platform developed by Star Cloud, an Estonian educational technology company, in partnership with Kenya Literature Bureau (KLB), Risk Africa Innovatis, UNICEF, and Liquid Intelligent Technologies.
The Opiq platform aims to digitize school curricula and make high-speed internet accessible to schools across Kenya. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance digital learning in the country.
Speaking at the event, President Kersti Kaljulaid emphasized the importance of digital literacy in education, stating, “Estonia is a relatively young nation, but we have focused on building a country where each generation should grow digitally. Crucial to achieving this objective is a high literacy rate, so we have built a highly skilled national teaching workforce and created a learning environment that supports achieving quality learning outcomes for all children.”
Antti Rammo, CEO of StarCloud LLC Estonia, expressed his excitement about the partnership and the interest generated in Kenya, saying, “Digitised study materials will significantly improve the availability of high-quality study literature and education in general, including the creation of opportunities for distance learning.”
Kenya Literature Bureau Managing Director, Victor Lomaria, appreciated the engagement, highlighting the quality output and speed of conversion of books into ePub3, HLML5, and interactive digital content formats.
UNICEF and Liquid Intelligent Technologies are working together to map and connect high-speed internet to schools across Kenya, enhancing the reach of digital technology in the country.
Through this partnership, Liquid Intelligent Technologies aims to connect more schools to explore diverse technologies, business models, and regulatory arrangements, providing broadband connectivity and unlimited internet to schools and communities.
As part of the Giga initiative, Liquid has successfully connected 4000 schools to the internet across Africa and has mapped 150,000 schools through the continent.
