On September 13, 2021, a new case was filed challenging the University of Nairobi's (UoN) move to appoint executive deans after abolishing five offices of Deputy Vice-Chancellors (DVC) in July.
The case, certified as urgent, was filed by Mr. Alois Onyango Aero, who claims the new governance structure has no backing in law and the appointments were not subjected to competition and merit.
Mr. Onyango argues that the University of Nairobi council has no powers to abolish schools, colleges, faculties, and institutes, and that the changes are against the Constitution, the university Charter, and amount to usurpation of the powers of the Commission of University Education and the Ministry of Education.
Justice Jairus Ngaah set October 6 as the hearing date for directions.
This is the second case to be filed challenging the changes announced in July, following a case filed by lecturers under the University Academic Staff Union.
