On September 12, 2021, a significant event unfolded at the consecration of Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Bishop Rose Ayiemba Okeno in Kakamega County. Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi and his Ford-Kenya counterpart, Moses Wetang'ula, made a dramatic exit from the ceremony.
According to a video circulating on social media, Mudavadi, Wetang'ula, and their allies were seen walking away while waving at the congregation. This unexpected move came after Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit barred politicians from speaking during the event.
Archbishop Sapit made it clear that the ACK would no longer tolerate the politicization of its events. In a stern declaration, he stated, 'We have said this before and leaders have failed to honour this. Today, I want to decree here that we are not going to allow political elites to speak within the church precincts. We are not going to allow the pulpit to be used as grounds to propagate political rhetoric, propaganda, hate, and spite. No.'
The ceremony was attended by other prominent figures, including ODM party leader Raila Odinga, Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu, and Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala.
