On September 12, 2021, Reverend Rose Okeno made history by becoming the first female bishop in the Anglican Church of Kenya. The consecration ceremony was presided over by Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit.
Reverend Okeno's election as the Head of Butere Diocese was a significant milestone, as she defeated two male competitors, Venerable John Anzaya and Reverend Harrison Etindi, in a second round of voting.
Reverend Okeno had been serving as the acting bishop since the resignation of Bishop Tim Wambunya in September last year.
The consecration ceremony was attended by prominent leaders, including ODM Leader Raila Odinga, ANC Leader Musalia Mudavadi, and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, although they were not allowed to speak.
