Published on September 12, 2021, a fundraising walk dubbed 'Zero hunger walk' was held at Kanjeru Primary School in Kikuyu constituency to improve performance through hunger eradication.
According to Agatha Karimi, the school chief principal, around 14 per cent of the children in Kanjeru Primary School are orphans, while the rest live with separated parents. The total vulnerability statistics stand at over 65 per cent of the total enrollment, with 16 per cent of the enrollment coming from Shauri Yako, an informal settlement situated between Kanjeru stadium and Kikuyu.
The school aimed to raise Sh2,435,075 for a one-year feeding programme and an additional Sh5,774,600 for physical facilities like dining tables, a dining hall, and an ablution block. George Ngotho, an alumnus of the school and past president of the Rotary Club of Kikuyu, noted that poverty negatively affects pupils' academics, growth, and discipline.
Paralympics track star Henry Wanyoike, an alumnus and board member of the school, emphasized the challenge of pupils missing school due to lack of food and nutrition issues.
