On July 3, 2019, the Kenyan government made a U-turn, agreeing to offer return tickets to the 48 doctors studying in Cuba.
Health Secretary Sicily Kariuki announced the decision as part of reforms to the State-sponsored training program, which will also fund the doctors' travel during their August summer break.
The reforms were triggered by the suicide of a Kenyan doctor in Cuba and the hiring of 100 Cuban doctors despite opposition from a doctors' union.
Ms Kariuki stated that a team would be sent to Cuba in July to confirm the travel arrangements with the students.
One of the medics in Cuba confirmed the travel arrangements, stating that the exact dates of travel would be based on available air tickets.
The government is expected to pay a total of Sh138 million in stipends for the 48 doctors.
Ms Kariuki also shared a personal message, highlighting the importance of family and relationships.
