On September 10, 2021, Sao Paulo FC announced that they had parted ways with veteran defender Dani Alves, citing an unpaid wage dispute as the reason for the decision.

According to Sao Paulo's sporting director, Carlos Belmonte, the club had informed manager Hernan Crespo that Alves would no longer be part of the team.

Belmonte revealed that Alves' advisers had informed the club that the player's training boycott would continue until his outstanding salary was paid, which they estimated to be around 11 million reais (approximately 1.8 million euros).

Belmonte acknowledged that Sao Paulo FC recognised the debt and had tabled an offer to Alves, which was rejected.

The dispute between Alves and Sao Paulo FC began when he left the club to participate in the Olympic Games, where he captained Brazil to a gold medal, his 43rd title.

Alves had joined Sao Paulo FC in 2019 on a three-year contract.
