Published on September 10, 2021, Nigerian troops have made a significant breakthrough in their fight against Boko Haram, arresting a high-profile member of the terrorist group.
According to reports, the arrest was made during a raid in Damboa, North East Borno State, where soldiers also seized 281 bags of 50kg urea fertiliser and arrested two distributors.
The arrested individual, Yawi Modu, is a commander who had been on the lists of wanted terrorists. His arrest is a major blow to the group, which has been responsible for the deaths of over 97,000 people and the destruction of social infrastructure since 2009.
The Nigerian army has been conducting operations to push Boko Haram fighters to the fringes of the Lake Chad region, which borders with Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.
A military spokesman explained that the federal government banned urea fertiliser due to its use as a major component in manufacturing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) by terrorists.
The spokesman also revealed that the terrorists were planning to unleash terror on innocent Nigerians to remain relevant after many of their members were killed in security operations.
