Laikipia, Kenya, September 10, 2021 - The government has taken steps to ensure the safe reopening of schools in Laikipia, an area plagued by banditry attacks.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi issued a directive to reopen schools in the region, starting from Monday, with police officers tasked to guarantee security.

The decision comes after a visit by CS Matiangi to the area on Friday, where he witnessed the devastating effects of the banditry attacks.

Banditry attacks have been on the rise in Laikipia, resulting in the loss of lives and displacement of hundreds of residents, including school-going children and women.

As a result, several schools were forced to close, affecting over 2,000 learners.

CS Matiangi has ordered the establishment of a police division at Ol Moran area to support the resumption of learning.

Additionally, two new police stations will be established in the area, and National Police Reservists will be deployed to disturbed areas to increase police presence.

The interior ministry will also engage relevant ministries and agencies to review the management of the Laikipia conservancy and mitigate its attraction as a conflict hotspot.

Displaced families will receive food and non-food items, and the government will assist in resettling displaced residents.
