Published on September 10, 2021, Jambojet, Kenya's first low-cost airline, has taken to the skies with its inaugural flight to Goma, the capital of North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The airline, which was launched in 2014 and is owned by national carrier Kenya Airways, aims to tap into the projected growth in air travel in Africa, with an average annual expansion of nearly 5% expected over the next two decades.
According to Jambojet's chairman, Vincent Rague, the airline wants to be part of this growth, saying, 'We want to be part of the growth.'
Other Kenyan firms, including major banks Equity and KCB Group, are also expanding into the Democratic Republic of Congo, a relatively untapped market.
Jambojet will operate twice-weekly flights from its Nairobi hub to Goma, increasing to four times a week in the near future.
The airline currently operates a fleet of six De Havilland Dash 8-400 planes and serves six local destinations from its Nairobi hub, including popular resort towns along the Kenyan coast.
