Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has expressed his admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo's ability to extend his career, suggesting that the 36-year-old forward could play until he is 40.
Rooney, now managing Derby County in the Championship, made the comments after Ronaldo rejoined United from Juventus last month on a two-year contract.
"The last time he played here, he was more of a runner, a great dribbler, with pace and power," Rooney said, reflecting on Ronaldo's first spell at Old Trafford between 2003-09, during which he won eight major trophies.
However, Rooney noted that Ronaldo's game has undergone significant changes, with the Portuguese forward now focusing on scoring goals rather than relying on his speed and agility.
"Whereas now, he's a goalscorer. I think his game has adapted dramatically," Rooney said.
Rooney, United's all-time top scorer, also praised Ronaldo's physical condition, suggesting that he has taken good care of himself and is still in great shape.
"His ability is obviously one thing, but then he's also looked after himself massively... he's still in great condition. It wouldn't surprise me if he's playing until he's 40, like Ryan Giggs did, and still scoring goals," Rooney said.
Ronaldo, who scored 118 goals for United during his first spell, is expected to feature when they take on Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.
