On September 10, 2021, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya announced that his administration had set aside Sh60 million to support people living with disabilities in the county.
According to the Governor, at least 49,000 beneficiaries have been identified in 12 sub-counties, following a census conducted by the county to establish the number of people living with disabilities, their living conditions, and their immediate needs.
"The census and the need assessment report is what is guiding the county as we implement programmes aimed at uplifting the lives of the disabled persons in the county," Governor Oparanya said during a meeting with national officials of the National Council For Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD) led by Executive Director Harun Hassan.
The county plans to provide wheelchairs and crutches to disabled persons and support their education.
Many people living with disabilities in the county were found to be living in abject poverty, according to the report.
