Published on September 9, 2021, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has placed Moi University under investigation over allegations of embezzlement and the presence of 'ghost workers'.
The investigation, which was triggered by a whistleblower's tip, aims to uncover the truth behind the alleged mismanagement of funds at the institution.
According to EACC, the university's management has been requested to provide original documents detailing all teaching and non-teaching staff from July 1, 2018, to date.
Prof Isaac Kosgei, the Vice Chancellor of Moi University, has refuted the corruption claims, stating that the institution is doing well despite facing historical issues and challenges affecting universities across the country.
However, EACC's North Rift regional boss, Japheth Baithalu, confirmed that the institution is under investigation for mismanagement, but emphasized that the claims are still allegations.
The university has been facing financial crises, with plans to shut down some of its campuses in August. The academic staff have also raised alarm over alleged delays in remittances from their employer to financial institutions in the past two years.
