Former MP Orie Rogo Manduli, a trailblazing politician and sports icon, left an indelible mark on Kenyan politics and culture. Her daughter Elizabeth Rogo has now shared the poignant details of her mother's final hours.
According to Elizabeth, her mother's life was cut short on September 8, 2021, at 3:42pm, after a heart attack. Despite efforts by doctors to resuscitate her, the outcome was tragic.
Elizabeth recalled that her mother had been in and out of hospital, with a particularly significant moment just two months prior when the family held a thanksgiving ceremony at their Riverside home in Nairobi after she was discharged from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Nairobi Hospital.
"She had been ill for a while and just two months ago, she was discharged from the ICU at Nairobi Hospital," Elizabeth stated, highlighting the resilience of her mother in the face of adversity.
However, Manduli's health struggles were not limited to her physical well-being. Elizabeth believes that the loss of her sister Alison Rogo in January 2020 may have taken a toll on her mother's mental health.
As news of Manduli's passing spread, leaders from across the country paid tribute to her remarkable life and achievements. President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, ODM leader Raila Odinga, and ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi were among those who mourned her loss.
The President recalled Manduli's exploits as a sports woman and model, saying Kenyans would forever cherish her achievement as the first African woman Safari Rally driver.
"It is sad and unfortunate that death has taken away Mama Orie Rogo Manduli, one of our country's most recognizable, highly charismatic and accomplished politicians. A bold leader and mentor, Ms Manduli tirelessly championed for women empowerment," the President mourned.
