Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid has arrived in Nairobi, Kenya, marking her maiden trip to Africa. The visit, which is expected to last three days, is set to focus on digital technology and e-governance.
President Kaljulaid was received at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Raychelle Omamo, and Defence counterpart, Monica Juma.
During her visit, the Estonian President is set to hold talks with Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta and other senior government officials. She will also meet with Safaricom chiefs, officials of taxi-hailing app Bolt, and senior officials at the Ministry of Education.
Estonia, a European Union member state, has been at the forefront of embracing digital technology. The country has implemented an e-voting system, which was first tested in 2015. It has also introduced an e-ID system, one of the most advanced in the world, allowing citizens to sign documents and access services remotely.
The country's e-residency permit allows individuals to access certain services electronically, even if they are outside the country. Estonia has also been a pioneer in e-schooling, allowing parents to remotely check on their children's performance and contact teachers.
