Published on September 9, 2021, Ecowas has suspended Guinea's participation in the regional bloc's decision-making processes following a military coup.
The coup, led by Col. Mamady Doumbouya, occurred over the weekend and resulted in the detention of President Alpha Conde.
According to reports, the coup leaders have replaced all ministers with military commanders and have promised to form a unity government in weeks.
While the US, UN, and AU have condemned the coup, many citizens of Guinea are reportedly happy about the development, citing rampant corruption and mismanagement under President Conde's administration.
Despite the suspension, Ecowas has not imposed any sanctions on Guinea, and a high-level mission is set to visit the capital Conakry on Thursday to assess the situation.
