Fifa Secretary-General Fatma Samoura is set to visit Kenya for the first time since her appointment in 2016, marking a significant milestone in her tenure as the first ever woman and African to hold the position.

Samoura will be in Kenya for a two-day visit, during which she will attend the Caf Women Champions League Cecafa Qualifiers final at Nyayo Stadium on September 9th. The match will feature Vihiga Queens of Kenya and Commercial Bank of Ethiopia FC, who will face off in the final of the Cecafa (East Africa) Zonal Qualifiers for TotalEnergies Caf Women’s Champions League.

According to the FKF official website, Vihiga Queens tamed Simba Queens of Tanzania 1-2 to qualify for the final, while Commercial Bank of Ethiopia beat Lady Doves of Uganda 5-3 on penalties after the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Samoura will be accompanied by Sarai Bareman, FIFA’s Chief Women’s Football Officer. The two will witness the crowning of the region’s first ever representative to the Caf Women’s Champions League.

“We welcome the FIFA Secretary-General to Kenya. We look forward to hosting her and engaging her about the development of the game in Kenya,” said Nick Mwendwa, FKF official.

This visit marks a significant moment for women’s football in Kenya, with the country’s clubs participating in regional and continental competitions for the first time.
