On September 6, 2021, Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago flagged off 51 students who had secured scholarships to study at Tampere University in Finland.

The students, selected through a competitive process, will pursue medicine and other science-related courses. Of the 51 students, 25 will be pursuing degree courses while the other 26 will undertake diploma courses.

According to Silas Tarus, Uasin Gishu Director of Communication, the deal between the county government and the Finnish government was finalised when Governor Mandago visited Finland in August. The county government catered for the documentation of the students as well as their air tickets.

Tarus expressed hope that the students would secure jobs once they complete their studies. The selected students were shortlisted and informed of the programmes they were qualified to take.

The programme, which is the brainchild of Governor Mandago, aims to provide opportunities for students seeking education and also offers a chance for graduates to secure job opportunities in Finland. The county government has also penned deals with other countries such as Sweden, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates to provide job opportunities for TVET graduates.
