On September 3, 2021, a building in Kinoo, Kikuyu sub-county, collapsed after residents watched it tilt and eventually crumble. The county government had warned the owners, George Kamau and Florence Wairimu, to stop construction in January 2021.
According to Housing Executive Mugo Kimani, the county government had written to the owners on January 18, 2021, warning them that the building was being constructed without the necessary approvals. The county had ordered the immediate demolition of the building, with Kimani stating, "Should you fail to undertake the demolition with immediate effect, the county government will enter into the said premises and undertake the demolition at your cost and without further warning,"
Demolition of the building entered its second day on Monday morning, with tenants from adjacent plots advised to seek alternative shelter until the area was secured. Fortunately, nobody was injured in the incident.
