Kenya's Recce Squad and the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) made a strong impression in an international shooting competition held in the country, emerging top and second overall respectively.

The International Defence Pistol Association (IDPA) African championship, which made its debut in Kenya, attracted shooters from Africa and across the world. The championship was held at the Kirigiti shooting range on September 4, 2021, and was officially opened by ATPU Director Martin Otieno.

ATPU emerged best overall, scooping 9 trophies, while the General Service Unit (GSU), affiliated to Recce Squad, emerged second, bagging six trophies. Kenya Prisons and Kenya Police came in third and fourth respectively, with the latter bagging four and the former three trophies.

Individually, DCI-ATPU lead instructor Sammy Onyango successfully defended his title as the overall ESP Master, while Chief Inspector Alvince Osura won the PCC Marksman category. Police Constable (PC) Mike Kiptanui came in second in the ESP Expert tier.

Other winners include John Asanju, who was named the ESP sharpshooter winner, and PC Aden Barrow, who took runners-up. The competition also attracted teams from Spain and Switzerland among other select European nations.

While congratulating the winning teams, Otieno complimented the rest of the participating teams for displaying a spirit of sportsmanship.
