On November 22, 2020, a military coup in Guinea led to the ousting of President Alpha Conde and the dissolution of the government. The coup occurred just before Guinea's World Cup qualifier against Morocco in Conakry, which was subsequently called off.

Liverpool, Keita's club, has been in constant contact with him and his national team management to ensure his safety. According to a statement from the club, they are 'satisfied that he is safe and well cared for.' The situation remains fluid, and Liverpool will maintain regular dialogue with the relevant authorities to bring Keita back to the club in a timely and secure manner.

Keita, 26, had started Liverpool's opening two league games and was an unused substitute in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea. Liverpool's next match is against Leeds United on September 12, after the international break.

Interestingly, while Guinea's borders have been reportedly closed, the Moroccan team was allowed safe passage home on the same day as the coup.
