On July 3, 2019, the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) announced that they are reviewing the inquest ruling on the killing of Baby Samantha Pendo in Kisumu.
The move comes after Kisumu Resident Magistrate Beryl Omollo found senior police officers, including the former Kisumu County commander, culpable of the death in February 2019.
According to DPP Noordin Haji, the process will initiate prosecution of suspects found culpable as per the inquest findings.
During the 1st International Conference on Police Accountability in Africa, Haji emphasized that police excesses will not find comfort within the justice system during his tenure.
He also announced that the ODPP is developing guidelines to guide the National Police Service's conduct when enforcing citizens' rights to assemble, demonstrate, picket, and petition, as per Article 37 of the Constitution.
