Located about 100km north of Mombasa, Malindi is a coastal destination that offers a mix of luxury and affordability. While many know Mombasa and its surrounding areas, Malindi remains a hidden gem for those looking to explore the Kenyan coast without overspending.
One of the best ways to experience Malindi on a budget is to opt for accommodation that is within walking distance of the beach. Budget hotels and self-catering options are plentiful, and you can find a place to stay that suits your needs without breaking the bank.
Once you have secured your accommodation, it's time to explore the area's many attractions. One of the top things to do in Malindi is visit the White Elephant Sea and Art Lodge, a unique blend of nature and art that is free to enter. However, you will need to purchase a meal or drink to gain access.
The lodge is situated on the last limb of the Arabuko forest and faces the National Marine Park in Malindi. It was founded in 1984 by artist Armando Tanzini, who had a vision of creating a marriage between nature and art. The lodge features an excellent display of art in different small galleries, from the auditorium at the entrance to the other galleries inside the lodge.
Another popular attraction in Malindi is the Vasco Da Gama Pillar, a historic site that is managed by the Kenya National Museums. The pillar gives you a glimpse into the life and work of the first European to reach India by sea, and access costs Sh100 for Kenyans. You will need to show your National Identity Card to gain entry.
For a deeper understanding of the coastal tribes and cultures, visit the Malindi National Museum. The museum features different artefacts that have been collected from the tribes in the coastal region and showcases the different trade routes used back in the day. While here, you can also visit the house of columns, home to the first ever coelacanth to be caught in Kenya.
Finally, no trip to Malindi would be complete without visiting the Mambrui sand dunes, one of the few places with beautiful untouched sand dunes. Mambrui is also home to Kola beach, which is referred to as the region's 'golden beach' due to the occurrence of sand dunes by the beach. A visit to Mambrui is free, making it an ideal activity for those on a budget.
For a unique and educational experience, visit the Marafa depression, also known as Hell's Kitchen. This sandstone canyon outside Malindi town is a popular attraction that is steeped in local legend. According to legend, a village once existed in the area, but it vanished with an old woman inside. The different colours of the sandstone are particularly striking during sunset.
Finally, the Falconry of Kenya is a must-visit attraction for animal lovers. The Falconry of Kenya acts not only as a zoo but as a rehabilitation centre for birds of prey that have been injured. Most of the birds are brought there for medication after they have been rescued from the wild, and entry fees is Sh200 per person.
