Published on December 21, 2019, Arsenal's technical director Edu has been defending the club's transfer strategy over the summer, despite the team's poor start to the season.

Arsenal have spent a record-breaking 150 million pounds ($208 million) on young recruits such as Ben White, Martin Odegaard, and Aaron Ramsdale, in a bid to form a foundation for the future.

"We have to see the wider context than just the money around it," Edu told Sky. "We signed six players who are under 23, which means a lot in terms of our planning."

He added that 21 players had left the club over the past year, and that the team needed time to settle and gel.

"It's a lot, almost a revolution," Edu said. "But how are you going to fill those 21 holes? You need time, you cannot come in and do it straight away."

Despite the team's struggles, Edu remains optimistic about the future, citing the talent of the young players and the experience of the senior players in the squad.

"Around those five senior players, we have very, very good, talented players which we believe in," he said.

Arsenal are already on the back foot, having lost their first three league games without scoring a goal and conceding nine.

However, Edu declined to set a target for the club this season, instead focusing on creating a solid foundation for the future.

"I don't want to go for top four or top six or top eight or top 10," he said. "I'm just really looking forward to seeing this squad play together."
