On September 4, 2021, the 15th edition of the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) Africa championships took place at the Kirigiti shooting range in Kiambu, Kenya. The event marked a significant milestone for Kenya's shooting sports, with Standard Group CEO Orlando Lyomu hailing the level of organization and preparation as 'impressive.'
Lyomu, who attended the event, expressed his confidence in Kenya's ability to host another championship and attract more international shooters in the near future. He noted that the event had opened the way for Kenya to host high-profile global competitions in the shooting sports arena.
According to Lyomu, the level of competence in shooting sports in Kenya is increasing rapidly, with the number of masters in the sport rising from three to ten in just four to five years. This growth, he attributed to the hard work and dedication of Kenyan shooters.
However, Lyomu also highlighted the challenges facing the sport, including the high cost of ammunition, which restricts access to the sport for many civilians. He emphasized the need for access to cheaper ammunition to enable the sport to grow and reach a wider audience.
Lyomu's endorsement of Kenya's shooting sports is a significant boost to the sport's development, and it remains to be seen whether the country can capitalize on this momentum to host more international competitions in the future.
