On June 2, 2021, the Kenyan embassy in Saudi Arabia informed the family of Maximilla Muhadia of her death, nearly three months after she had gone missing. The family had been searching for her since May 15, when her phone went off after she made a distress call.
According to her parents, Violet Kasika and Agrey Mtoro, Maximilla had been working as a maid in Saudi Arabia. They alleged that she was tortured to death, with serious injuries to her head, including being hit with a blunt object multiple times.
During her burial at her Chepsonoi home in Nandi County on Thursday, the family expressed their outrage and disappointment at the Kenyan embassy's response to their daughter's distress calls. They claimed that if the embassy had responded promptly, her death could have been avoided.
Ms. Kasika described the gruesome injuries her daughter suffered, saying, "My daughter was tortured. She was hit on the head several times with a blunt object. The attack distorted her face. We have been told she bled to death." She also narrated how she struggled to identify her daughter's body due to the severe mutilation.
Mr. Mtoro added that the family is still waiting for any probe into the death, but so far, none has been initiated.
