On the seventh month of pregnancy, Catherine Nyaboke gave birth to a baby weighing a mere 600 grammes, a weight that raised concerns among doctors at Nyamira County Referral Hospital.

However, after a 90-day stay in the hospital's nursery, the baby was discharged four days ago, weighing a healthy two kilogrammes.

Dr Timothy Ombati, who attended to the baby at the paediatric ward, attributed the baby's survival to the extra care she received, saying that premature babies often have underdeveloped body organs.

"The baby was born with vital body organs like the lungs and liver not fully developed, but we were able to maintain her health by being vigilant against common challenges that kill newborns," Dr Ombati said.

According to Dr Ombati, the medical team put God first in their services to the baby girl, which helped them overcome the dangers.

The baby's mother, Catherine Nyaboke, was overjoyed at her baby's recovery, saying that she left her baby's survival to God.

"When I delivered her, I was sure her survival chances were very slim, but I left it all to God," Nyaboke said.

Throughout her baby's stay in the hospital, Nyaboke followed the instructions of the medical team and provided kangaroo care to her baby, which helped maintain the baby's temperature.

"I was very keen on every instruction the doctors gave me in caring for my baby. For example, I milked for the baby and offered kangaroo care to her," Nyaboke said.
