On July 13, 2021, Kenya's National Sevens Team Shujaa was in Kurumu City, Japan, for a rugby sevens tournament.

Less than two months later, the team was preparing for the 2021/2022 HSBC World Sevens Series, which kicked off with the Vancouver Sevens on September 18-19 and the Edmonton Sevens on September 25-26.

Head coach Innocent Simiyu announced that the team would be going to camp for nine days before departing for Canada on September 13.

The final squad of 13 players would be selected from an earlier training squad of 22 players, which included the larger Olympics training team and nine trialists.

Simiyu stated that the team selection would be based on four pillars: good health, being skillful, being in good form in strength and conditioning, and being in a good training environment.

“These are the four pillars to guide my selection of the final squad that goes for residential training for nine days before we depart to the North American country,” Simiyu told Standard Sports.

As the team prepares for the 2021/2022 HSBC World Sevens Series, their technical team's focus is to get a formidable side that could reach the medal bracket at next year's Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, and the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town, South Africa.
