On September 3, 2021, the Ministry of Education in Kenya issued new financial reporting guidelines for public secondary schools, in line with the Public Finance Management Act 2012 and the Basic Education Act 2013.

The existing financial reporting calendar year in public schools, which runs from January 1 to December 31, will be replaced by a new financial year that aligns with the government's financial year, from July 1 to June 30.

According to the new guidelines, public schools will be required to submit their financial statements by September 30, 2021, in compliance with the Public Finance Management Act 2012.

Education Principal Secretary Julius Jwan directed schools to prepare financial statements for the period from January 1, 2021, to June 30, 2021, for those that had already submitted their financial statements for the year ending December 31, 2020.

For schools that had not submitted their financial statements for the year 2020, Jwan directed them to prepare the statements for a period of 18 months from January 1, 2020, to June 30, 2021.
