As of September 2, 2021, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a 30-day ultimatum to owners of sex toys, shisha pipes, and drones that have been abandoned at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) warehouse.
The items, including a large consignment of restricted goods, have clogged customs warehouses due to delayed collection by importers.
According to Ms Lilian Nyawanda, Commissioner for Customs and Border Control at the KRA, many Kenyans imported these items without being aware of the stringent permit conditions required for their sale in the market.
“Most passengers are unknowledgeable or un-informed on prohibitions of goods such as shisha and sex toys and restrictions imposed on goods such as drones and firearms,” she said in an interview with Business Daily.
Ms Nyawanda warned that items not collected by the end of September 30 will be auctioned or destroyed due to limited warehouse capacity and slow permit issuance.
