July 3, 2019 - In a remarkable achievement, Seaways Kenya Limited has experienced a 30% revenue growth since deploying the Garimoto portal four years ago. This milestone comes despite the numerous challenges faced by the automotive industry, including high taxes, punitive policies, and delayed issuance of licensed plates for used and newly imported vehicles.
The Garimoto portal, recognized as the most preferred Automotive Importation Portal by Automotive Industry Excellence Awards, has significantly enhanced Seaways' efficiency levels, reduced communication costs, and improved customer satisfaction.
According to Joshua Babu, Managing Director of Seaways Kenya Limited, the company is currently working on an improved version of the portal, which will feature API's linking directly to other portals owned by its partners. This integration will provide a seamless experience on a B2B platform, enabling the company to serve its customers better.
'It is increasingly difficult to survive in business without embracing digital solutions,' Babu said. 'The growing number of young middle-class individuals who run their lives through digital platforms means that any business without a clear digital strategy will miss out on business from this class.'
Garimoto portal has also empowered customers to make informed decisions about the overall cost of importing a car, allowing them to calculate the entire cost of clearing and transportation to the final destination.
Joshua Babu dedicated the achievement to his late son, Jared Babu Mwazo, who was instrumental in developing the portal. Babu emphasized the importance of being a licensed customs agent, which has given Seaways credibility and trust with clients beyond just having the portal.
With a clientele base of over 10,000 customers across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, DRC, and South Sudan, Seaways Limited has a loyal customer base. To ensure effective business operations, the company has deployed various business tools and measures, including instant messaging to keep customers updated on the progress of their shipment.
Seaways also offers concessionary rates for port charges and extended free storage at Mombasa port to save clients on exorbitant port charges in the event of any delay in the customs clearance process. Additionally, the company provides after-sales support, including negotiated and affordable rates for motor insurance with added benefits and privileges.
Joshua Babu called on the government to remove punitive taxes on motor vehicle business, citing the recent increase in taxes as a challenge for the industry. He also noted that the delay in issuance of registration number plates by NTSA is a significant challenge for the business.
