September 2, 2021, marked a significant day in the US Open tennis tournament as third-seeded Naomi Osaka of Japan secured her spot in the third round.
Osaka's opponent, Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic, withdrew from the match due to a non-COVID-related viral illness, as revealed on Danilovic's Instagram account.
"I have been feeling unwell these past few days dealing with a non-COVID-related viral illness," Danilovic stated on Instagram.
"I am so sad to have to withdraw from my match this morning. I was really looking forward to playing against Naomi on Arthur Ashe Stadium today, but not to be this time," Danilovic added.
With Danilovic's withdrawal, Osaka will now face Canada's 73rd-ranked Leylah Fernandez in the next round.
