Published on September 2, 2021, a draft policy by Nairobi City County has proposed a significant increase in parking fees for motorists in the city centre.
The policy, aimed at boosting parking revenue and streamlining parking services, suggests hourly charges ranging from Sh75 to Sh90 in the city centre, with off-street parking attracting a Sh100 hourly fee.
For the typical city resident who drives to work, the new charges will more than triple, with daily fees increasing from Sh200 to between Sh675 and Sh900.
According to the policy, motorists will be charged Sh90 for every hour of parking in on-street parking slots south of Kenyatta Avenue and west of Moi Avenue, while other areas will attract an hourly parking fee of Sh75.
The policy also proposes the removal of seasonal tickets from the city centre and instead, offering them outside the city centre at Sh6,000 a month.
Additionally, the policy aims to regulate parking in mixed areas, including Upper Hill, Community, Westlands, Yaya Centre, Eastleigh, Karen, Gigiri, Ngara, and Hurlingham, where high traffic volumes and parking demand exist.
The county will also provide secure off-street parking for residents in the city centre, as well as designate areas for parking of 'official' vehicles, loading or unloading bays, and spaces for people with disabilities.
Enforcement officers will be responsible for identifying vehicles parked in illegal locations or without full payment, with fines to be paid through an app.
