On August 20, 2021, a disturbing incident occurred at Thiru Primary School in Nyahururu, Laikipia West, where three pupils were tied to a tree as a form of punishment for truancy and delinquency.

According to Nyahururu Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner Moses Muroki, the incident has been reported to the DCI, and an investigation is underway.

Commission Quality Assurance Officer Irene Kandenge from the Rift Valley Teachers Service Commission (TSC) condemned the incident, stating that child protection is a top priority and that investigations are ongoing to establish those liable.

"We have established that the incident happened on August 20, and it was done in this school. It is wrong, we are not about it, and we are sorry to the children for what they went through," Muroki said.

"What we advocate as TSC is child protection. We are also looking at how teachers are dealing with learners. We are condemning what has happened and what we are saying is that no one has been declared guilty of an offence until the disciplinary process has been taken," Kandenge added.
