George Mungai Njoroge, the vice chairperson of a Bodaboda Sacco in Murang'a County, shares the success story of the Sacco that was formed five years ago.
According to Njoroge, the Sacco has become a source of inspiration after transforming the lives of its members, who are majorly the youth.
"It is high time for youths to understand that operating a Bodaboda business is work like any other and should be taken with the seriousness it deserves," Njoroge begins.
The Sacco, which boasts of about 100 members, has enabled the youth to improve their livelihoods and earnings from their savings.
From a humble beginning, the Sacco made profits amounting to Sh1.1 million in the 2019 financial year.
Every individual member took home dividends of not less than Sh3,500 while others earned Sh8,000 depending on their contributions.
The Sacco has also invested in Bodabodas and Tuktuks, and procured a two-acre parcel of land valued at Sh1.2 million.
Additionally, the Sacco has established a welfare programme that caters for members who fall sick or lose their lives.
As a result of these investments, most members have been able to expand their finances by establishing businesses for their spouses, construct their own homes, and procure Tuktuks through loans from the Sacco.
Emmanuel Wanyoike, a member, testifies that joining the Sacco has encouraged him to save his earnings and access cheap loans, enabling him to upgrade from a Bodaboda to a Tuktuk.
Kamau Kang'e, the Chairperson of Kabati business community, praises the Sacco for making the area safe by controlling its members through internal regulations and working closely with security agents.
Paul Wambugu, the Kandara OCPD, commends the youths for demonstrating that it is possible for them to set goals and accomplish them, and encourages them to reach out to more operators and join Saccos instead of operating individually.
