On September 2, 2021, the Kenya Roads Board (KRB) announced plans to disburse KSh55 billion to four state agencies to maintain the country's road network over the next ten months.
The funds will be allocated as follows: Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) will receive KSh26.6 billion for the rehabilitation of 48,418 kilometres of road, accounting for 30% of the entire road network in the country.
Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERRA) will get KSh14.6 billion for Class C roads, while Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) will receive KSh6.7 billion. Kenya Wildlife Service will receive KSh651 million.
The planned maintenance work includes routine maintenance on 25,361 kilometres, periodic maintenance on 916 kilometres, performance-based maintenance contracts on 9,422 kilometres, spot improvement on 7,695 kilometres, and upgrading on 24 kilometres of roads across the country.
According to the KRB's 2018/2022 strategic plan, the board requires KSh150 billion annually to maintain the country's road network.
