Published on September 1, 2021, Nairobi County has proposed a new parking policy that would see parking charged on an hourly basis in the city.

The current daily parking rate has been criticized for promoting long-term parking and making short-term parking expensive. In contrast, hourly fees in other countries are more competitive.

Under the proposed policy, on-street parking in the most attractive areas within the CBD, south of Kenyatta Avenue and west of Moi Avenue, would cost Sh90 per hour. Off-street parking within the CBD would be charged at Sh100 per hour.

Other on-street parking areas in the CBD would attract a fee of Sh75 per hour, while other areas and hubs would be charged Sh50 and Sh40 per hour, respectively.

The policy also seeks to phase out season tickets from Nairobi Central Business District and offer season tickets outside these areas at Sh6,000 per month.

The county aims to regulate parking between 8am and 8pm in CBD and areas around shopping centers, and between 8am and 6pm in other regulated areas.

Additionally, the county proposes to reserve 2% of all parking spaces for the mobility impaired and establish charging points for electric vehicles at certain parking bays.

On enforcement, the county plans to improve its legal framework and technology to identify vehicles that haven't paid fees or are parked in undesignated areas.

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has opposed the move to charge parking in residential areas, terming it exploitative.
