On August 25, 2021, 14-year-old Winnie Jebiwot from Kipsaina Village in Elgeyo Marakwet County ingested a poisonous agrochemical after her parents failed to take her for form one admission due to financial constraints.
Her father, Philip Kemboi, revealed that they rushed her to a hospital where she was treated and discharged, and she is still recuperating.
Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, who was moved by the family's plight after it was aired on KTN News, pledged to ensure that Jebiwot got admitted to school.
On August 31, 2021, Murkomen arranged for Jebiwot to be placed at Turesia Secondary School, and he promised to take care of her shopping and school fees.
"I have arranged for Winnie Jebiwot to be taken to a good boarding school. I will take care of her shopping and school fees. She should be in school by close of business tomorrow," Murkomen stated.
