Motorists in Nairobi are set to breathe a sigh of relief as the Nairobi Expressway construction nears completion. According to Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) acting Director General Eng. David Muchilwa, the last section of the closed road is expected to open on October 15.

The Nairobi Expressway, a 27km road constructed at a cost of Sh62 billion, will begin at Mlolongo and end at James Gichuru Road, where motorists will be charged for use. The road is being constructed by Chinese contractor China Road and Bridge Company (CRBC) and is expected to be complete by February 2022.

KeNHA has promised to keep Mombasa Road users updated on the flow of traffic. The authority has also established a multi-agency team to guide on traffic control interventions, including ensuring that construction sites have adequate and well-signposted lanes, rapid intervention in case of accidents, and well-defined U-turn points.

Speaking on the recent traffic chaos along Mombasa Road, Eng. Muchilwa said that the authority is determined to reduce the time spent on the road to the bare minimum. He added that the authority will use social media and radio stations to update road users on the flow of traffic.

On the recent accident that caused chaos along Mombasa Road, Nairobi Area Traffic Commander Joshua Omukata said that breakdown services were not able to access the scene on time due to the traffic jam.

Eng. Muchilwa urged motorists to be cautious as they drive along this road and keep within speed limits indicated along with other traffic signs. He also appealed to all road users to exercise road courtesy as that will help manage the traffic even better.
