On August 1, 2018, a fatal incident occurred at the main gate of the Garissa military camp, where a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier shot and killed a civilian.

According to testimony given by KDF officer Julius Muiruri, the incident occurred when an unknown person attempted to grab the soldier's rifle while on duty as a sentry guard.

As the officer recounted, the unknown person was asked to identify himself but failed to comply, prompting the soldier to shoot him twice in the chest.

Published on August 31, 2021, the incident has been the subject of an ongoing inquest, with the victim's lawyer questioning the decision to shoot the deceased on the chest rather than the legs to immobilize him.

Testifying in the inquest, Muiruri explained that the bullet landed on the deceased's chest, and the officer was facing him at the time of the shooting.

The hearing continues.
