Motorists have been experiencing extreme traffic congestion on Mombasa Road due to the construction of the Nairobi Expressway. To address this issue, a multi-agency team has been set up to guide traffic control interventions on the affected sections.
The team's intervention will include ensuring that construction sites have adequate and well-signposted lanes, rapid intervention in case of accidents, and well-defined U-turn points.
Major works have been ongoing to manage the flow of traffic concentrated along the JKIA-Mlolongo section, which was earlier identified as one of the most congested areas. The projected opening date for this section is September 10, according to Eng David Muchilwa, the acting director-general of KeNHA.
The Nairobi Expressway, a 27.1-kilometre project, began construction in October 2019 and is scheduled for completion in June 2022. The Sh59 billion project is 57 per cent complete, with heavy works having been accomplished, as stated by KeNHA chairman Wangai Ndirangu on August 25.
Motorists are urged to avoid driving on the construction site and follow the designated diversion to avoid raising dust. The Westlands-James Gichuru section is expected to be opened on September 30, followed by the Haile Selassie-UoN Roundabout on October 15.
