On August 31, 2021, Kenya's Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) reported a significant increase in the country's earnings from sisal exports, reaching KSh2.45 billion in the first half of 2021.
This represents a 10.96% increase from the KSh2.2 billion earned in the same period of 2020, driven by rebounding prices in key export markets.
According to the AFA, the export volumes of sisal fibre increased by 9.5% to 14,822.4 tonnes in H1 2021, compared to 13,533.8 tonnes in H1 2020.
The higher export volumes were accompanied by a price gain of approximately KSh10 per kilogramme of fibre, with the average price of sisal rising to KSh174.23 per kilogramme, a 6.4% increase from KSh163.76 in the previous year.
Kenya's sisal exports had previously surged in Q1 2021, reaching KSh1.2 billion, with 7,687.6 metric tonnes of sisal exported during the period.
As the world's third-largest producer of sisal, Kenya continues to play a significant role in the global sisal market, alongside Brazil and Tanzania.
