Kenya's national football team, Harambee Stars, is gearing up for the World Cup qualifiers, but head coach Jacob 'Ghost' Mulee has made some tough decisions to strengthen the squad. On August 31, 2021, Mulee released eight players from the team's training camp, a move that has left some fans and players surprised.
Among the players dropped from the national team are Gor Mahia's Benson Omala, Clifton Miheso, and Samuel Onyango, who were part of the team's provisional squad. Wazito FC's top scorer, Kevin Kimani, has also been released, along with KCB duo Nahashon Alembi and Baraka Badi.
Goalkeeper Brandon Obiero from Kariobangi Sharks and former AFC Leopards defender Clyde Senaji complete the list of players who have been released. The dropping of Obiero comes after Mulee faced criticism for picking two goalkeepers from the same team.
Despite the releases, Harambee Stars still has a strong squad, with captain Victor Wanyama, Ayub Timbe, Johana Omollo, Joash Onyango, and Jesse Were among the players who have been retained. New faces in the team include Serbia-based Richard Odada, FC Talanta's Enock Momanyi, and Bandari's Siraj Mohammed.
