DP Ruto Welcomes New Security Detail ¶
Deputy President William Ruto has welcomed his new security detail, replacing the elite General Service Unit (GSU) officers guarding his official residence in Karen. The change was announced on August 29, during a Sunday service at Holy Mass St. Augustine Catholic Church in Nakuru County.
Speaking at the church, Ruto criticized the government for making changes to his security detail, stating that he was ready to be guarded by the G4S security firm. He said, "I don't have any problem with being guarded by the APs at my home. If there's more work for the GSU officers, let them protect the citizens,"
On August 30, Ruto shared images of him having tea with the Administration Police (AP) officers who replaced the GSU officers. He posted, "Sharing a cup of tea with the new security team as I welcome them to the Official Residence of the Deputy President,"
The Office of the Deputy President has formally written to the Inspector General of Police seeking an official explanation on the matter and reasons for the breach of security. The newly appointed National Police Service spokesman, Bruno Shioso, stated that the changes in the Deputy President's security detail were part of a normal reassignment of duties.
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei stated that he would petition Parliament to summon Mutyambai over the controversial changes.
