On August 30, 2021, a devastating accident occurred in Kirinyaga County, claiming one life and injuring four others.

The incident happened at 1:00 pm when soil caved in a sewer project at Kiandieri area, where five casual laborers were working on the Kerugoya-Kutus sewer system.

Three of the workers managed to escape the trench, but the narrow trench slowed down rescue operations, which took three hours to complete.

Residents and rescue teams worked tirelessly to shovel through the soil to rescue the trapped workers.

According to Kirinyaga Central Deputy County Commissioner Daniel Ndege, the piping was being done by eight people, which is why reports initially indicated eight had been buried alive.

"We have lost one person who was working on the Kerugoya-Kutus sewer system project, four have been taken to Kerugoya Level Four Hospital where they are receiving treatment," said Ndege.
