On August 30, 2021, police in Kirinyaga County cracked down on a birthday party in the Mount Kenya forest, arresting 79 students from various Nairobi colleges.

The students, who had traveled to the forest in Kimunye area, Gichugu Constituency, were seized for violating Covid-19 rules, including not wearing face masks.

During the arrest, police confiscated eight birthday cakes and impounded two mini buses and three matatus that the students had hired to travel to the area.

The students were taken to Kianyaga police station and held for questioning, along with their drivers, who were also apprehended and booked at the station.

After questioning, the students were released on police bond pending court charges.

According to Kirinyaga East Sub-County police boss Anthony Wanjuu, the students had failed to observe Covid-19 rules, despite coming from as far as Dagoretti in Nairobi for celebrations.
