Kenyatta University Launches Groundbreaking Climate Justice School ¶
On August 30, 2021, over 700 stakeholders converged at Kenyatta University for the launch of the Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice, a first-of-its-kind program in Kenya's history.
The two-week event, which ended on September 12, featured lectures, discussions, breakout activities, and exhibitions at the Conference Centre of KU. The school aimed to address the poor representation of the larger African continent in matters of climate justice.
According to the coordinators, the institution will be anchored on a trans-disciplinary curriculum for climate justice in the global south, providing a platform for grassroots communities to voice their concerns and be part of the climate conversation.
Dr. Pacifica Ogola, the director of climate change at the Ministry of Environment, emphasized that climate justice is a critical issue in international climate change dialogues, yet Africans at the frontline of climate change are often left out of the conversation.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, in a statement made in January 2021 at the Climate Adaptation Summit, reaffirmed Kenya's commitment to implementing global climate change adaptation initiatives, including scaling up adaptation efforts and mainstreaming climate change into the national development strategy.
