On August 29, 2021, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai directed the Laikipia County Police Commander to take administrative action against a police officer who was filmed harassing residents in Majengo, Nanyuki.
The officer, who was visibly drunk and wearing a full police uniform, was wielding an AK-47 rifle and exchanging words with a civilian who was accused of selling drugs.
During his weekly #EngageTheIG forum on Twitter, Mutyambai revealed that the officer would undergo rehabilitation before being reinstated to duty.
“Administrative action has been recommended. Including rehabilitation for the affected officer,” the police boss tweeted.
The Police Service has also set up a department to deal with mental health issues among officers, in response to rising cases of police brutality and domestic violence.
