At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, Kenya's Nancy Chelangat made history by winning the country's first medal, a bronze in the women's 1500m-T11 category, on August 30, 2021, at the Olympic Stadium.

Chelangat's impressive performance saw her clock a season-best time of 4:45.58, securing the bronze medal behind South African Coetzee Louzane, who settled for silver in 4:40.96, and Mexican Rodriguez Saavedra, who broke the world record with a time of 4:37.40.
